Latest Race Report
Eastbourne racer Kelvin
Hassell put in his best performance so far this season in
the CAMSO V8 Championship meeting, held on 20 July at
Warneton Speedway, Belgium. The 29-year old clinched two
podium finishes, taking third place in the first heat and
fifth place in heat two, topping-off a great meeting by
taking the win in the final.
Hassell sat on the third row of the grid for the
first heat
with Vincent Lehouck taking the inside. Frenchman Bertrand
Zore took pole with Anton Gonnissen and Wim Moonen filling
the second row. At the start, Hassell lost a place to Jos
Jansen, but was quick to reclaim fifth position by passing
Lehouck on the inside of turns one and two.
At the front of the pack, Moonen had taken the lead with
Gonnissen following him through to second place. Hassell
claimed another position as he manoeuvred his Chevrolet
Monte Carlo around the outside of Zore in turn four. With
four laps to go Hassell took advantage of a mistake by
Jansen, nipping down the inside on the exit of turn four to
take a podium finish.
Race two
saw Hassell gridded on the inside of the second row. He made
a fantastic start, moving up to third place before a wide
line on the exit of turn four allowed Lehouck through on the
inside. Handling problems demoted him another place to
fifth. However Hassell held firm, defending his position
from American Bruce Andrews.
The final
saw Hassell on the inside of
Gonnissen on the second row behind pole-sitter Zore. As the
green flag dropped, Hassell sped past Gonnissen into turn
one. By the third lap, Hassell had taken the lead, passing
Zore down the inside on the exit of turn four.
As Zore fended off Gonnissen, Hassell pulled out an
impressive lead. At the half-way point in the race,
Gonnissen managed to get around the outside of Zore to take
second with current championship points leader Gary Ellis
moving up to third from the last row on the grid.
With five laps to go and Hassell beginning to lap
backmarkers, Ellis passed Gonnissen for second with Kurt
Dujardyn close on his heels. However, Hassell’s pace did not
diminish: he took the win and was joined by Ellis and
Dujardyn on the podium.
“It has been a great weekend,” said a delighted Hassell. “I
think this has been our best weekend of results this season.
It has done us huge favours in the championship standings
but we still have a lot of work to do if we are to get into
the top three.”
Hassell has moved up to fourth place in the championship
standings, 13 points behind Dutchman Wim Moonen in third
place. The next set of points will be decided on 24th August
at the next CAMSO V8 meeting held at
Warneton Speedway in Belgium.
